This adds to the overall experience of the game as there's nothing better than defeating enemies than having a mate alongside you to help you out in stick situations. Another innovative RPG game available for the iPad is Puzzle Quest 2. Puzzle Quest plays like any other traditional RPG game, only that combat is played out via a competitive puzzle game. It's game where you have to arrange the coins so that 3 of the same colored coins are matching. The more you do this the more damage you can do to your opponent. Along the way you will unlock new skills so defeating enemies will be easier.

Graphically, the game is as beautiful as the Xbox LIVE Arcade version. The 2D cel-shaded graphics is breathtaking and really adds to the overall medieval atmosphere of the game. I found Puzzle Quest 2 to be a very fun game myself, but it's not a game that everyone may enjoy as the puzzles can get harder the more you progress through the game.

There are a number of other great iPad RPG games available for you to download. Some of them may cost you quite a bit but others can be free for you to play. Thanks to the technology behind the iPad hardware, playing these games using the touch screen adds even more value.

More in the right direction for home use, but suffers from looking like a roof rack with a seat. The Price? 0, monitor extra. Vision Racer, UK. This is a bare bones curvy pipe work chassis with a race seat that supplies attachment points for controllers, pedals, steering wheels. It's a good quality and attractive looking assembly. The monitor mounts separately. The Price? 00 plus. Rally Office Chair, USA. An upholstered car rally seat perched on a secretaries 5 legged chair on wheels. For a laugh you could buy one of these, that is if the expense tickles your funny bone. The Price? 0-00. Playseats evolution gaming, USA. Good value for money. Streamlined designed chassis with race seat in a low racer position, and mount points for race wheel, gear change, pedals etc. Compact, foldable and somewhat portable. Good quality, expanding range of cockpit choices, accepts most game controllers. Good marks for allowing the home racer to personalize the equipment used, and sexy extras like base chassis vibrators. The Price? 0-0.The best of the bunch.

So that's a quick cross section of the types of games cockpit s that are out there. The most common stand out feature is that prices seem excessive for what's being offered, and out of context for the average home gamer's budget, but there is a clear trend to lower prices and better offerings. Its World War II and you are in command of a diesel submarine somewhere in the Mediterranean. Your mission: to destroy all enemy merchant shipping in these waters. You've tracked this convoy for ten minutes and you're ready to strike. Up periscope, the convoy's lead ship is a destroyer. Fire one! Fire two!

You watch as both torpedoes strike the ship and it begins to sink. Turning your attention to the second ship, a tanker, you fire two torpedoes. Two hits! Suddenly your sub shudders. You're under fire from the second destroyer! Dive! Dive! Reduce speed, stop all engines. You wait, not daring to breathe. Finally, the sound you dreaded most begins Depth Charges!!

This is the action in the Thorn EMI Video game cartridge, Submarine Commander. As Commander of a WWII Submarine, the player must sink all convoys in the area. The player has a limited supply of fuel, torpedoes, air, and charge in the batteries. To recharge batteries, and replenish air supply, the sub must surface. Surface speed is faster than underwater speed, but uses more fuel. Scoring is based on the amount of fuel left, torpedoes remaining, and game time.

The game makes excellent use of the Atari's graphic and sound capabilities. It has three screens. The first screen is a detailed map of the Mediterranean, showing the submarine's position, positions of all convoys and land masses in the area. Each screen has indicators showing compass heading of the sub, amount of fuel and torpedoes left, the submarine's speed, damage indicators, amount of air left, battery charge, position of the submarine relative to the sea bottom, and a game clock.

The second screen is the Sonar Scope. It looks, sounds, and works like a real sonar scope. Two indicators are added to this screen; tonnage sunk and Hydrophone Chart. The Hydrophone shows the player which direction to steer to intercept the convoy.

The third screen is the most important. This is the periscope view. This is where all the action takes place. This screen shows clouds, water, and the ships. As the ships enter the view, they're black shapes. The closer they get the more detailed they become. When torpedoes are fired they appear on screen and move toward the target. A 3D effect is achieved with your torpedoes receding in the distance. When a torpedo strikes a ship, the water billows up in the explosion with excellent sound effects as the ship slowly begins to sink. Ships can also fire back as evidenced by flashes and sounds of their guns. If the sub takes a hit, the whole screen shakes. There is one minor problem in the game. Moving the submarine, especially in the heat of battle is difficult to grasp. The sub doesn't turn as fast as the player wants. This slows down the action, but once the player gets used to it, it isn't that noticeable.

The game is in real time using the joystick and keyboard. There are nine levels of play with ships on levels seven thru nine possibly requiring two hits to sink. There are four types of ships: destroyers, tankers, cargo, and PT boats. The game ends when the sub runs out of fuel, air, sinks, or the battery charge is depleted; while scoring is based on the length of the game the tonnage sunk, and the amount of fuel used. The user manual is very good, covering all aspects of the game. This game will appeal to those who like arcade graphics and sounds, but enjoy a sense of war gaming.

Well, lets take a trip back in history.

If you were lucky enough to be in your pre-teens during the peak of arcades, like I did, then arcades probably hold a very fond place in your heart. Certainly it's nostalgic, but it runs a lot deeper than that. It is without a doubt, a piece of your childhood as well as pop culture.

If you're thinking about building your own arcade collection, I must offer this disclaimer: You're going to be addicted the moment after you plug in your first game. They'll be no going back.

Sure, you could be like everybody else and buy an Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo Wii, or whatever happens to be the best video game console out there. But guess what? Those console, while having all technology behind them, still won't be able to compete with arcade classics like Burgertime, Street Fighter, Double Dragon, etc...Sure, the visuals & presentation will be greater on the consoles. But what's the single most relevant aspect to playing video games? Fun! Capital F-U-N. All that other stuff is meaningless.

If there is one component that is missing from console games is that all encompassing experience that arcades brought to the table. Just think back to those old arcades. The machines entirely surrounded you. It was kind of like a capsule. All the bright lights and loud sounds that you were picking up was from this cocoon-like cabinet.

The statement that arises always when making the comparison is "But a console takes a few inches of space, you need a lot of room for arcade games". This is 100% true. There is no getting around it.. Arcade games take up a lot of space. But for the real video game historian, some real estate in exchange for an engrossing hobby seems like a fair trade off. As log as what you're doing is something you enjoy, there is no downside.

If you're just starting out, here are some of the things that you should know about collecting arcade games before you just jump right in:

• 1) Space. I cannot stress this enough but you do in fact need space in your house to get into collecting arcade machines. First just start by finding enough space for a couple of machines then you'll notice,your house tends to become more open. It's funny how that works.

• 2) Be handy. Look at it like this: if you're buying a 20 year old machine, you might get the random glitch. It comes with the hobby. Think if you were buying a 20 year old car. Chances are you're going to have to get under the hood once in a blue moon.

This is especially true if you're buying a machine that's been in an arcade for its entire life. Just think of all those bratty kids that treated the joystick like it was their own personal pull-up bar. The game is going to be tired and is going to need some love and attention.

The good news is that there are literally hundreds of places you could go online for a missing part or manual for the machine that needs a little fix.

If you are not the handiest person in the world, its ok. I am positive you could find someone within your city limits that can fix an arcade game. Just think about every time you walk into a 7-11, laundromat, pool hall, etc, you always see at least one arcade game, don't you? Well, chances are the owners of those games have people they use to work on any problems.

• 3) Where/Who do I buy the machines from? Thank goodness for the internet. There are many sites that sell arcade machines. Where I recommend purchasing arcade games is eBay. It may seem very obvious, and for good reason. eBay is the best place to purchase arcade games for several reasons:

• Selection - When you go to most other websites, you are only going to see what that particular seller (chances are he sells on eBay too), and only that seller, has available for sale. Meanwhile, going to eBay you will see hundreds, if not thousands of listings on arcade machines for sale.

• Price - If you're just starting your collection, you came in at a very good time. Arcade machines are selling for a lot less than they used to be and eBay is where you will get the most competitive pricing. It makes sense. The more competition there is, the better the prices are going to be. A tried and true example of the free market?

• Feedback - This has to be the most important reason for buying machines through eBay. You can actually see what kind of reputation a seller has. If you went to another businesses' website do you honestly think they're going to report any problems they've had with past buyers? Of course they won't.

But in eBay you get to see every seller's feedback score. If you're looking at a particular game that interests you, then all you have to do is look at the seller's feedback and if it seems like he's had some problems in the past with buyers, then you know its time to move on to the next one. Because chances are, someone else in eBay is selling the very same machine and also has a much better reputation with buyers.
